The Allen County Health Department has stepped in to give local elementary students healthier food choices.

Students and community members gathered for a special ceremony Monday to dedicate ten fruit trees for the students at Lima South Magnet School. The trees will be used to cultivate an "Edible Orchard" which will allow students to learn gardening skills and spread what they've learned to their families. Students will be able to pick apples, oranges, pears and cherries from the trees dedicated.

"It's a great opportunity for them to have access to fresh fruit and to see the life cycle of the tree. We already have trees that were planted this past spring that are producing fruit and for the kids to actually get out and see the pollination to see the flowers, the pollinators - and it's something in the curriculum with our biology curriculum that goes from Kindergarten all the way through eighth grade," said Chad Fallis, Principal of Lima South.
