Nine new hire deputy candidates competed in a fitness examination, which is all done in efforts to improve employee health and fitness.

"The physical fitness standards are the same standards set by the State of Ohio through Mike DeWine's office for the new hires. They have to run a mile and a half, age 29 and under have to run a mile and a half in 11 minutes and 30 seconds. I believe they have to do some sit-ups and push-ups, so we just want to implement those same standards at best our hiring practices for physical fitness have been spotty in the past, but we're definitely going to raise that bar," says Treglia.

Sheriff Treglia says last month they spent around $1,000 upgrading their workout room hoping it will motivate employees to stay in shape.

"Everyone would like it to become a huge deal for everyone in our office, we believe physical fitness is the key to be in law enforcement today and to protecting yourself and being healthy it's just a better thing to do for life," says Treglia.

Five candidates competing for two open positions on the SWAT team were also tested.

"After this they'll go through their polygraph exams and psychological exams for the new hires. When we're done here on the track we'll go back to our office and actually work out in our gym to do, like the SWAT team will have to do pull-ups and they'll have to do a lot more to get accepted on the team," says Treglia.

They plan to expand even further with their fitness goals when additional funding becomes available.
