The American Red Cross of West Central Ohio held their second blood drive during Trauma Awareness Month in May.

Traumatic injuries often result in an urgent need for blood, making type O negative blood, and type AB plasma extremely valuable. Without available time to check for the patients’ blood type, these universal blood types can save lives by avoiding time constraints.

The Executive Director of the American Red Cross of West Central Ohio, Derek Stemen, says, “Each year traumas account for around 41 million emergency room visits and things like a single car accident victim can need around 100 transfusions of blood.”
