The air was alive with competition and fun in Faurot Park for the 2017 Lima Soap Box Derby.  It’s a tradition that’s been held in Lima for years and years, though the goal of the event has been the same since the beginning: just having fun as a family.

"It's just a great-feeling experience watching these kids' faces and seeing them show sportsmanship, shaking each other's hands, it's like a big family, it really is," said Steve Skinner, the director of the Lima Soap Box Derby.

Nearly 30 racers of different ages participated in three different categories for this year’s derby after getting their cars ready for the long trip down the hill.  Since the Lima Derby has been going on for so long, some of the racers are just continuing the tradition of being a part of the competition.

"My family's been doing it for a long time, and I've been doing it for a long time, it's really fun to just go down the track," said Brayden Truex.  "I don't have to take apart the car because I'm not a new racer and so I just go down and see what it's like."

And others say that it’s fun despite the hard work.

"You have to figure out your weight, especially your back, having to bend on this car a lot takes a lot of work but it's definitely worth it - going down that ramp, coming right off of it, and the smooth ride down with the wind blowing in your face," said Billy Bourk.

The three champions in Lima will have the chance to "Run Down Derby Downs" in Akron next month.
