The Allen County Land Bank is gearing up for one of its biggest demolitions to date.

The apartment complex on Haller Street on the north side of Lima is set to come down within the month. Since they started the Land Bank has razed 23 buildings with 7 of those located in townships and villages. There are currently 128 buildings boarded up and in line to be demolished. At this point 180 properties are in the land banks name with dozens more in the pipeline. They are in the process of selling several lots with 44 vacant lots on the market with many more to follow.

Allen County Treasurer Rachael Gilroy says, “The Land Bank absolutely does not want to own a bunch of properties and we’re looking at contracting with a real-estate firm to help us market those. We want to get these properties back out into the community and into tax payers hands where they belong.”

Gilroy says the main objective of the Land Bank is to get properties back to a productive use. During the past several months the county has recouped $63,000 in back taxes where property owners have paid what was due and were able to maintain the property. While the foreclosure case is closed property owners will still be held to zoning and property maintenance codes.
