The flash flooding that occurred after Saturday's heavy downpours was not the only problem this area saw, the dangerous lightening caused millions of dollars in damage to city equipment.

The City of Lima is working to get the wastewater treatment plant back up and running on its own after it lost power during last Saturday's rash of thunderstorms. Just before 5 a.m. the main switch gear was struck by lightning, leaving the plant without power. It also left the backup generators capable of powering the plant useless, as they could not be put online. As wastewater continued to come into the facility, it could not be processed and started to back up. At one point as much as 13 feet of wastewater filled basements and tunnels. At no time did any of the wastewater leave the plant untreated.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was called and the plant is in compliance. Temporary pumps and generators kept the plant operational, until the repairs to the switch gear were made, and as of noon Wednesday, the back up generators were operational. There are still many repairs that need to be done before the plant is back to normal.

Lima Utilities Director, Mike Caprella says insurance adjusters have already been on site accessing that damage. He also says it could be Thanksgiving before all the damage is repaired.
