A familiar sight outside the Armstrong Air and Space Museum is getting restored.

The F5D Skylancer airplane has been outside the museum since 1972 and was once piloted by Neil Armstrong before he became an astronaut.  The airplane has some wear and tear thanks to the years that it has been sitting outside, so Monday it will be transported to Copley, Ohio to be repainted and repaired.

The museum staff are ready to see the plane restored back to its original glory.

"We here are excited and sad to see it go, but it has been through so much abuse and so much weathering that we're really excited about letting it be taken so it can repaired and the 'cosmetic surgery' can begin," said Greg Brown, a volunteer with the Armstrong Air and Space Museum.

The restoration is expected to be finished in time for the 2019 anniversary of the moon landing.
