Local volunteers are returning from Texas after being deployed to help out with disaster relief and clean up.

The American Red Cross sent out half a dozen volunteers with Disaster Program Manager, Katherine Reed, to assist with Hurricane Harvey victims.

The American Red Cross aided with clean up, food, shelter, and mental and spiritual care. Reed says it was a humbling experience, but it was devastating to see the damage the massive storm caused. She tells us, what matters now is helping Harvey victims get their lives back together, and they will continue to lend a hand in any way they can.

"It is devastating, I'm not a tall person but we had up to knee-high water that we were waiting through to get from where we were lodged to next-door to the office, and some of the highways are still barely passable, some of the freeways you can imagine the traffic, the roads were impassable because of the water on the bridges, the overpasses needed to be inspected for structural safety. A lot of homes are still not even accessible so people are just now starting to really get a good grip about what happened to them," says Reed.

If you'd like to be a part of the American Red Cross' next deployment, you can attend an informational meeting on Thursday at 6 p.m. at 610 South Collett Street in Lima.
