Lima Ohio -

A crowd of Lima residents packed the gymnasium at St. Luke's Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall for Tuesday's Mayoral Candidate Forum.

It was a tense environment as Dr. Matthew J. Kinkley moderated hot topics between Incumbent Mayor, David Berger, and his opponent, Keith Cheney. One of the major issues not only plaguing Lima, but the entire State of Ohio is that of the opioid epidemic. Berger is pleased with current programs in place saying, "The work that our Opioid Action Commission is engaging, I think, is making a real difference on this issue locally."

Cheney has a different plan of action starting with the Lima Police Department. He says, "The drug dealers are controlling the streets in Lima and that must end." Cheney suggests bulking up the LPD in both numbers and better equipment to combat drug distribution and the dangerous crimes associated with it.

Economic development, especially downtown, proved to be another point of interest for both candidates. Berger sees the development happening now and believes that trend will continue. His opponent, Cheney, doesn't feel enough is being done and that a plan should be set in place to help the downtown of Lima excel.

Berger and Cheney will meet again at the Chamber Forum on October the 4th.
