Lima City Students are sharing their thoughts with the families of officers and firefighters around the country.

Four years ago, Miriam Rader-Downing's class at Heritage Elementary started sending out sympathy cards to the families and departments of officers and firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The first card they sent through the 'Officer Down Project' was for a Toledo K-9 officer who died protecting his partner while chasing a criminal, and since then, they have sent out more than 100 cards all across the country.

"I think that they get a new respect for the police officers and the firemen. We've talked about how they are the ones that stand between us and the bad guys or between us and danger. We've also talked about the families that these first responders leave behind and that seems to be where the children's sympathy lies is with the families, the children of the police officers and firemen who have lost their lives," said Rader-Downing.
