Teams of people made their way to downtown Lima to take part in HeartChase 2017.

The event is a joint effort between St. Rita's and the American Heart Association and brings together people that have been personally affected or know someone who has been affected by heart disease.  The teams participated in mini games set up all around the square in downtown Lima, each game teaches teams about healthy lifestyle habits.  Those that put on HeartChase say that raising awareness about heart health needs to be done in Allen County.

"It's extremely important because heart disease is the number one cause of death across the US and specifically here in Allen County," said Amanda Mills, senior director for HeartChase Lima.  "The other important piece of it is that 80% of heart disease is preventable, so we can actually really move the needle by having events like this to increase awareness, provide prevention tips, and education."

One of the speakers was Brittney Wilson, whose husband was in a car accident and had to go through heart surgery.  She says that seeing others going through the same situation means a lot.

"One of the things that got me through this are other people's stories and support groups and people sharing similar stories with us, that helps so much to see the light at the end of the tunnel," said Wilson.

The team behind HeartChase also talks about healthy habits and heart health throughout the year.
