So far this year in Auglaize County, 6 people have died because of suicide and even more have attempted it, so the County’s Suicide Prevention Coalition took to the streets to raise awareness about the problem.

Suicide is a topic that may not be discussed enough, and family and friends of people who committed suicide gathered to remember those who they have lost and talk about their experiences during 3rd Annual Suicide Awareness Walk.

The keynote speaker for the walk, Amy Freymuth, who lost her son Patrick to Suicide in 2016 and now she helps others deal with their loss.  Freymuth says that communication with your loved one could be the key to help loved one who could be considering suicide.

“You know in our situation it was difficult, because we didm’t know that Patrick was struggling as much as he was until after the fact," says Amy Freymuth, speaker for the walk.  "So I think we all should be OK about talking about mental health and behavioral health issues.  We have to be OK to talk about suicide and not be fearful that means that someone will go commit suicide.  We have to half open dialogue and talk about that."

Freymuth says that they had a lot of good friends and family that they surrounded themselves with after their loss, and she says that Auglaize county has wonderful support systems for family members that have lost loved ones to suicide.
