It has been around 10 years since 42-year-old Steve Schmidt had started competing in strongman competitions.

This summer Schmidt set a world record for pressing a 340 pound metal block in the American’s Strongest Viking Competition. That put him on the radar do a head to head block press competition at the New Hampshire Highland games against Hafpor Bjornsson, or you may know him as the Mountain on Game of Thrones, and one morning in September he got the call.

“I wake up Saturday morning and ‘Hi I’m Bill Crawford and I was wondering if you would like to come press against Hafpor,”  says Steve Schmidt.  “It was like what is going on and how long do I have, I have a few days to get ready.”

Schmidt says he has competed against Hafpor before in competitions, but this would be the first time that it would be one on one and in front of 20 thousand people. They cut a 308, 330, and 341 pound blocks out of granite, the 341 pound block would break Schmidt’s current the World Record. The pair pressed each block and pushed each other to tie the world record.

“You know in your head all the time, you have to believe you can do it, but not until you go against someone of his caliber and when it’s all over and done you can sit down and say, wow everything I believe is real," Schmidt adds.

“When he broke it at the last show, it was awesome and the crowd went crazy’ says Stacy Schmidt, Steve’s wife. “But being in front of 20 thousand people, everybody was cheering for him. You know a guy from Putnam County, it was awesome.

That competition and tying the world record  has opened more doors for Schmidt.

“Like two hours after tying him I got a call for a World’s Strongest Man Qualifier. It really put me over the edge. I have been close to that for about four years, but haven’t got that final push, that really got me over that hump,” says Schmidt.

There is talk of a rematch next year, with bigger blocks and Schmidt says he is glad that there will be a little more than a few days notice to get ready to go against Hafpor again.

“Yea I got plenty of time now, it will not be like a weeks notice," laughed Schmidt.
