After weeks of pushing the issue back, Delphos City Council voted on Monday night on the upcoming grants for the city's firefighters.

City officials said the $336,000 federal grant, called "SAFER" that pays the salaries of three full-time firefighters every two years, is up this December. It was up to council to appropriate the funds to keep these three full-time employees, or look at other options. Monday night, several former, current emergency personnel and members of the public voiced their concerns at the podium, and a councilman-at-large shared his thoughts. Then, council went into executive session and came back with a vote.

"You are playing Russian roulette, and someone's going to die. (He) has given everything you've asked of him. He's been here for as long as I can remember. He does an outstanding job of keeping the city's finances in check, and can probably do a budget with a pen instead of a pencil. We trust him with millions of dollars in funds and assets, why can't you trust him when he says the money is there?" asked Chuck Shumaker, firefighter and EMT.

"If we have a $23 million budget, I'm not going to vote put us $300,000 more in debt, for anything, until we can have a long term plan established," said Josh Gillespie, Council-At-Large.

When council returned from executive session, they all voted in favor of keeping the three firefighter's salary and adding them to the temporary budget. That will cover their wages and benefits through April 1st, until a permanent budget will be written up.
