A group of local students is helping out other students who lost a lot due to Hurricane Harvey.

Sarah Maidon's first grade class at Shawnee Elmwood Elementary School started by collecting school supplies to send to Longfellow Elementary School in Houston, Texas. On top of school supplies, Maidon began sharing their cause on Facebook and collecting donations from across the country to give to the Houston teacher. As more money came in, the class colored in states on a map to track where the money they were raising came from. By the time they finished they had money coming from 36 states.

Maidon says she started this project because she wanted to help teachers who lost classroom items in the flooding on top of losing their personal possessions.

"I was just thinking, not only how can we help these kids in this classroom, but can we help the teacher as well that's been devastated by all of this. So it was a lesson for the kids, you know, compassion, giving to others, and so the kids really took it and ran with it," says Maidon.

The class was able to raise over $3,000 and five boxes full of supplies.
