The Lima Urban Forest Council invited the community out to learn more about the nature that surrounds them.

Today (10/07/17) the council held their first ever “Tree Fest”, kids could create art with items out of nature, paint a pumpkin and take a hay ride though Faurot Park. The Tree Fest is also kicking off the council’s “Lima Champion Trees” project, were they find the oldest and most unique trees and add them to a registry and encourage their preservation. The kids today had got a chance to check out an 248 year old Oak tree in Faurot Park that is on the registry.

“We really want the kids to get involved in nature, to start paying attention to the nature around them, particularly the trees around them. So if we can get those little kids to appreciate those big trees then hopefully they will be around for the long term," says Sarah Helton, the chairman of Lima's Urban Forest Council.

The Urban Forest Council is in place to take a look at all of the trees to the city and making sure we are doing what is best for them to make sure they are around for generations of people to come. If you would like to learn more about what the council does, you can search for their Facebook page at Lima’s Urban Forest Council.
