For the past several years, downtown Wapakoneta has been the place to kick off the holiday season, and one way they're able to do that is with several local businesses participating in the yearly Holiday Open House.

The Home for the Holidays event is held by the Wapakoneta Antique and Specialty Shops and features businesses opening up their doors with Christmas items galore for shoppers to take advantage of before the big holiday rush.  This weekend is one of the biggest for these businesses, who are glad that people are taking advantage of shopping in their own downtown.

"We love people shopping local, and it is a perfect opportunity for it - we just have a small town atmosphere where you can walk the streets and shop in the different shops, and just enjoy old-fashioned Christmas and have fun with it," said Landa Tominson, Co-Owner of Casa Chic.  "It’s never too early to start decorating, getting your decorations, and knowing how you’re going to do those types of things in your homes."

And staying local has its perks - as shoppers have a good opportunity to find that perfect gift that they may not have been able to find anywhere else.

"It is so exciting because Wapak offers such a good opportunity for so many different shops and so many different items that other stores do not have, the malls don’t have, and we have such a wide variety of different stores," Tominson said.

Shoppers could also enjoy a horse buggy ride through downtown as part of the festivities.
