The 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month.

That was the end of World War I and the beginning of what we now know as Veteran's Day. The day is for veterans from all wars and military branches to be honored and thanked for their service. The American Legion Post 96 in Lima holds a Veteran's Day ceremony every year, inviting people to make a wreath in honor of their fallen veterans.

"We respect all the veterans that have passed, and present," says Post Commander Robert Moreland. "We're hoping to have a lot of organizations show up to lay their wreaths for their organizations."

Aside from the wreaths, the Post's ceremony involves a eulogy of the flag and a video tribute. They also invited Pat Smith, Executive Director for the Allen County Historical Society and Museum, to speak. To mark the 100th anniversary of the war ending, the museum created an exhibit dedicated to World War I titled "Wake Up America". The exhibit focuses on Allen County's role in the Great War.

Smith says it's important to recognize that Allen County had around 3,500 residents who served in World War I and that we owe them our gratitude for their bravery and sacrifice to protect our freedom.

"In the case of Allen County, we had two major industries here that contributed," Smith says. "We had industrial support, but we also had a lot of volunteerism that went on. Pretty much everybody, even kids, got involved."

The exhibit runs through Veteran's Day next year.
