A man was arrested at Bath High School Wednesday (11/29/2017) night after his firearm accidentally discharged in the school.

Garry Tabler, Jr. was attending a basketball referee's meeting around 7 p.m. when he accidentally fired his gun. Tabler has a concealed carry permit but had the gun in his coat pocket when the incident occurred. While there are no rules on how a firearm should be carried, Lieutenant Brett Rider with the Allen County Sheriff's Office says that he always recommends carries holster-up.

"On the safety standpoint, it's always a holster," says Rider. "It's secured, it's not gonna go anywhere, it's not gonna get away from you. It's gonna be confined."

"Through the class they do cover the do's and don't's with your CCW and they're very thorough on that. So there's really no reason for anybody to not follow the rules. It could be accidental, if it's done on purpose you're gonna have to pay the consequences."

One of the topics the class goes over is where the permits apply and when they don't matter. Not only can businesses ban guns from their premises, but as far as schools and federal buildings as well as any building with a court room are concerned, Rider says concealed carry weapons are not allowed inside.

As for Tabler, the investigation will be submitted to a grand jury and after that, what happens will be up to the county prosecutor.
