Motivational speaker Simon Sinek says that leadership is not about being in charge, but about taking care of those you are in charge of. Allen Lima Youth Leadership students were doing just that at the University of Northwestern Ohio on Friday (12/01/2017).

The students went through activities where they had to make decisions in order to survive tough situations, like a plane crash. They ranked tools from most to least important to survival. The activity was meant to teach students how to identify what is the necessary and what is not to succeed both in the wild and and in the workplace.

"You know, they're thinking that they have to know how survive in the wilderness but really we're trying to teach them how they need to work together to solve a problem and take charge, and be the person to step up and be the leader," says ALL Youth coordinator Melissa Warren.

Part of the lesson of the day was teaching students that being a leader is sometimes speaking up about their ideas even if they seem a little crazy.

"Every group, no matter who you are and what you do, everyone has a leader and everyone knows someone they look up to," says Perry High School junior Louis Hoersten. "They're teaching us how to be that leader."

And while being a leader in a group is important, learning how to work with that group is also a lesson the students needed to learn.

"We had someone come in and show us how different personalities would react with different interactions in the work place, and groups of people who are gonna try and achieve a goal," says Hoersten.

While the students were at UNOH they were treated to a tour of the campus and lunch in the food court.
