It was like stepping into a winter T.V. land Saturday (12/2/2017) in Wapakoneta.

The town held a parade for day two of their annual Children's Hometown Holiday celebration weekend, which featured 50 favorite characters for kids to meet. But it was not Snoopy or the Grinch that had people lined up down the block.

Five year old Sofia Elguera was most excited to see Santa Claus. She told him her wish list, asking for an American Girl doll, and a big Hatchimal.

While Santa got the big fire truck entrance, there was plenty more for people to see and do from ice skating to ice sculpting. It is a fun-filled day that an estimated 3,000 people attended. Event Chair Elaine Poppe says it's become a tradition that so many keep coming back for year after year.

"A lot of them aren't from Wapakoneta anymore, they're people that used to live here and come back just for this event," says Poppe. "Since this is our 11th year, we have children now who are 24, 25 who attended the first one and who bring their families back."

It's a fun family event and totally free to the public. Poppe says that they spend all year fundraising so that every child in Wapakoneta gets a Christmas celebration.

"For one thing, over 60% of our children are on assisted lunch programs at school," says Poppe. "That means there has to be some way that they get something special just for them too because there are children that aren't going to have Christmas. Here, they will. They'll have this."

Poppe says she already has ideas to make next year's Hometown Holiday even bigger.
