Just over 4 million dollars in bonds were voted on for capital projects for upcoming year that included new equipment for police, fire, parks and street departments and the renovation to the Hall of Justice.  Council members also wanted to know why there wasn’t a vote for a bond to buy body cameras for the Police Department.  After testing 4 systems, Chief Kevin Martin told council that they were ready to buy cameras a few months ago, then Motorola offered a free look at their system, so the police department extended their testing period.

Chief Kevin Martin of the Lima Police Department says “We are in the process of testing that right now, as it looks that will not be the final product that we will ask council to approve, because we are finding issues with the camera itself.  With the durability, quality etc. But that is where we are at on that.”

Martin says they are in the final stages of the process and the administration s looking at having legislation submitted to council to buy the cameras in 2018. The police department has been testing different systems since 2015. Council also pushed four ordinances to a third reading that involved the city hiring a temporary services for various positions within the city in 2018.
