A tree was lit on the campus of Rhodes State College, not in honor of Christmas, but to honor the men and women in the criminal justice field that will be absent from their family's celebrations this year.

This is the third year that the criminal justice department held a tree lighting ceremony for the fallen officers and K9s that lost their lives in the line of duty. The ceremony gives students the chance to remember the importance of the work they will be doing. "While it’s less than last year, and we celebrate that, we recognize that everyone of those names is a family that is missing a loved one this time of year, that is person that is working in our field that has paid the ultimate sacrifice," said Richard Kohli, chairman of the Rhodes State College Criminal Justice Departments.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund, 143 law enforcement lost their lives in the line of duty in 2016.
