While it may be tempting to fire off a few celebratory shots on New Year's, Lima police are reminding citizens that it's illegal to do so within city limits.

LPD says it can be dangerous to fire a gun anytime, including on New Year's Eve, and while it may seem like a fun way to ring in the new year -- officers say the bullet from the gun could end up anywhere, including hurting someone or damaging property.

Police encourage citizens to have fun, but also to stay safe.

"Basically use common sense and the biggest reason I know people are trying to celebrate, but we do take this offense very seriously and you will land yourself in jail, so avoid it and tell people not to do that," said PTLM Justin Halker.

6th Ward Councilman Derry Glenn is also urging citizens in his ward to refrain from shooting off guns for New Year's.

"I know that it’s been going on a long time, everyone continues to shoot their guns after 12 o’clock on New Year’s, but please, I’m asking you, take consideration of your neighbors, take consideration of of the elderly who don’t want this," said Councilman Glenn.
