Getting a head start on your finances is a good way to kick off the new year.  Matt Metzger with Metzger Financial Services says that the new year is a good time to take financial responsibility and start thinking about saving up for that rainy day fund, as well as understanding any loans or debt that carry over into the new year.

Metzger recommends that you take the time at the beginning of the year to figure out your financial situation.

"Sit down, take some time, take an hour to two hours in the first couple weeks of the new year after you get through all the holiday things that have kind of cluttered the mind over the last few weeks - sit down and say OK where are we at, where we going to be this year, and establish a monthly cash flow," said Metzger.

Metzger says that a good way to see how you might spend money in 2018 is to look at the last few months of 2017.

"Take a 90 day look at your life - look at the last 90 days, there’s probably been some expensive periods in there just because we did just get through the holidays, but look at those, they're high water periods," said Metzger.  "Take an average of those 90 days and that will pretty much give you a pretty good idea of what you’re spending on a given 30 day period of time."

It's recommended that you seek a financial professional if you're still unsure of what steps you need to take for the new year.
