We've seen some freezing temperatures lately, but has it been cold enough to skate at Faurot Park?

Lima Director of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, Ric Stolly, said it is still not safe enough to skate yet. The department has been drilling the ice, testing it each day. On Wednesday afternoon it was only about two inches thick. Stolly said the ice needs to be about five to five and a half inches thick to be deemed safe. According to Stolly, the snow on top of the ice actually helps the pond freeze, keeping the cool temperatures sealed underneath.

"There's so much moving water underneath the surface it does create cavities in certain areas and does cause safety issues," said Stolly. "One of the main things, again, that we want for the folks of Lima is for it to be safe and enjoyable skating opportunity."

Stolly said he will be sure to let let Lima know when the pond is safe to skate on.
