When it gets this cold outside, many people's first thought is keeping themselves warm - but at Fassett Farm, their first priority is keeping the horses safe from the cold temperatures outside.

Much like humans, cold temperatures can be hard on horses - and that's why workers at Fassett Farm, which is home to the Equestrian Therapy Program, make sure special care and attention is given to their horses in the winter.  Along with making sure that the horses are fed and have plenty of bedding, there are several steps that caregivers have continued to  take over the last few weeks to keep the cold at bay.

"It’s a big challenge; I think the biggest challenge is knowing which horses that we need to blanket, and the ones we do not - some of our older horses don’t get as good of a hair coat and we do want to get them a blanket," said Michele Andrews-Sabol, the Executive Director of the Equestrian Therapy Program.  "Another challenge is constantly de-icing and breaking up water buckets, the buckets freeze quite frequently and the horses drink a lot more water because the air is so dry."

It's a lot of work, but luckily, there are people willing to put in the time and effort for helping out the horses.

"Our barn staff has been awesome, we’ve all been here a lot, this is been a challenge because it’s been such a long stint," Andrews-Sabol said.  "Our volunteers have been wonderful, they come out on Sundays and holidays, and they’ve been a great help too, so we’ve been very fortunate to have them."
