With the hurricane damage in Puerto Rico still being cleaned up, hospitals throughout the United States are finding that they are short on IV materials.

A major producer of the IV materials is in Puerto Rico, which is still without power in some parts of the island. Other drugs that are produced on Puerto Rico are also seeing a decrease on the mainland, and with the increased number of flu cases this season, hospitals need to find alternatives for the IVs that they can offer their patients.

"A lot of flu patients need extra IV fluid, so oral fluids are great and can meet a lot of patients' needs - we're still meeting the patients' needs here with fluids, but we're using alternative fluids," said Brian Latham, Director of Pharmacy for Mercy Health St. Rita's.  "Instead of a certain kind, it’s just another kind of fluid that patients can receive."
