It's a tale as old as time, yet the same scams seem to come up every year during tax season. So, before you file for tax returns, state officials are issuing warnings about the risk of tax fraud.

In one common scam, victims receive calls from someone claiming to be the IRS and threatening possible jail time if you do not pay within 24 hours. The scammer typically demands money through gift cards. The money off of the gift card is then spent almost immediately. Another common scam targets employers, by sending fraudulent company emails requesting employee W2 information.

"What they want is to get all of the W2 information and what they do is they file for a tax refund in your name," said DeWine.

Attorney General Mike DeWine says, to avoid becoming a victim of tax scams, you should file your tax returns as early as possible, making it harder for imposters to file a tax return in your name.

If you receive one of these calls or emails, you are urged to contact the police and the Attorney General's Office immediately.
