The Ottawa-Glandorf School District is asking voters to support an income tax to help avoid future funding problems.

The school board approved a 1% income tax to be placed on the May ballot. It would raise more than 2 million dollars a year for the district. School officials say they have been conservative when dealing with their finances, but they say, with a shrinking population and property values high in the school district, dollars coming into the school have continued to fall.

"The State of Ohio views us as a very wealthy district, because of our property values. So they lower the amount of money that we get as a share of state funding for the school districts. In spite of a lot of things we have done to try and control cost, as we have had teachers retire, we haven’t replaced them, we have addressed things with staffing. We had a grant that was recently phased out and when we did that, we cut back on staffing that had been grant funded," said Don Horstman, Superintendent of Ottawa-Glandorf School District.

Horstman says the district is still looking at ways to control their cost in the future, including eliminating a bus route for next year. If you would like to see the presentation made to the school board about the school's finances, log on to ottawaglandorf.org
