A new report from AAA says that crashes caused by drowsy drivers are higher than federal estimates.

According to the research done by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 9.5 percent of all crashes they observed were caused by drowsiness - which is different than the federal estimates of drowsiness causing just 1 to 2 percent of crashes.  Those with AAA say that getting enough sleep is important before heading out on the road, and knowing when to pull off if you're feeling tired.

"If you are driving and you notice yourself having trouble keeping your eyes open, drifting from your lane, or maybe not remembering the last few miles driven, then it’s time to get off the road," said Kimberly Schwind, senior manger of public affairs for AAA Ohio.

AAA also recommends traveling with an alert passenger and take turns driving or plan a break every two hours.
