With Valentine's Day fast approaching, people are going online to look for love, but scammers are looking for something different.

The Better Business Bureau and the Ohio Attorney General's Office is warning people not to fall for romance or sweetheart scams. These type of scammers are preying on victims year round, not just around Valentine's Day. In 2017, 40 Ohioans reported losing, on average, $40,000 each to the sweetheart scams. The scams involve mostly online relationship and at one point in the relationship, the scammer starts asking for money or personal information and never will want to meet up. To avoid being scammed yourself, it's all about paying attention to what is going on.

“You have to know how the conversation is going, they are going to try and convince you, they are in love with you and everything is fine. But there are still somethings, that you have to step back and realize what is being said and think about it," said Cheryl Parson, President of the West Central Ohio Better Business Bureau.

Parson says if you are doing online dating to make sure that it’s a secure site. Plus do some research and see if the website is one you can trust.
