The month of March has been designated American Red Cross Month, we'll look at some of the local help available from the organization.

Responding to disaster big and small is the calling for hundreds of people in the Lima Allen County region. March has been designated American Red Cross Month, and the West Central Ohio Chapter in Lima wants to thank their volunteers. If not for their efforts, many people facing disaster may not get the help they need. There's just over 500 volunteers that serve our local chapter in many ways. From teaching CPR to installing smoke detectors, to helping at blood donor days, there is a need for volunteers. In 2017, 163 families were helped after home fires, more than 24,000 units of blood were collected, impacting over 70,000 lives. However, the Red Cross does so much more than just disasters.

"We've also been able to provide emergency communication to about 360 families of military members and we install around 1,100 smoke alarms every single year, and this year we were able to train about 800 children in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade in our pillowcase project and so we're really excited about the impact that our volunteers are having in the community," commented Derek Stemen, American Red Cross of West Central Ohio Executive Director.

Stemen says they're always in need of volunteers. If you would like to join the team, just call 227-5121.
