Last week President Donald Trump accepted an invitation to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Assistant Professor of Political Science Nusta Carranza Ko sees this as a positive in the ongoing dispute. Tensions have risen in the past few months as the Asian nation increased its missile testing up until last month. Past presidents have received an invite by North Korea, but President Trump is the first to accept. Carranza said North Korea is showing its willingness to be peaceful. She also believes this could positively benefit neighboring countries. The meeting, if it brings peace, could stabilize countries like South Korea and China.

"If they do decide to denuclearize, it will be a temporary denuclearization that they will agree to," said Carranza. "They won't say that it is temporary, but deep inside its going to be part of their calculation because you have to think of the reason why North Korea was ever able to come to the negotiating table with the Americans in the first place. That's because they have nuclear weapons."

No meeting time or place has been set yet besides that it will be before May. Carranza said the meeting place will be a crucial factor.
