The old Kmart building in Saint Marys may escape demolition, as local businessmen see a future for that building.

Monday evening at the St. Marys Council meeting, it was announced that the old retail building on Celina Road may become a warehouse. Local businessmen approached the city last week with the proposal. The process is long from a done deal, as the Planning Commission and the Zoning Appeals Board must sign off on the changes, and the city has some structural and safety demands that need to be met before the 400 thousand dollar deal is complete. But if it does get passed then that old space will help fill a current need in the city.

“Right now there is no warehousing in the City of St. Marys, you either need Wapak, Celina or Sidney to warehouse anything. This gives our local manufacturers, you know we have quite a few of them, it gives them warehousing. They could either put stuff in or take stuff out, rather quickly to fulfill their needs. I think it’s a great business idea,” said Mayor Pat McGowan.

Council also approved buying over 300 thousand dollars in lighting and materials for the football stadium project. The school district will pay them back over 20 years, by making two payments a year. This is the same deal that paid for the lighting at the current stadium back in the late 70s. Work on the new stadium is expected to start this spring, and be open for the opening game in August.
