Tuesday morning, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson become the latest dismissal by President Donald Trump. In a tweet that came before 9 am, President Trump announced CIA Director Mike Pompeo as the new secretary of state and that Gina Haspel will be the first female director of the CIA.

"It was a little bit surprising but not too surprising," said Professor of Political Science at Ohio Northern University Robert Alexander. "Tillerson and Trump have had a pretty rocky relationship. You may recall a while back that there was some rumor that Tillerson was going to be ousted. There was a rumor that Tillerson had allegedly called Trump a moron."

Alexander mentioned that the two butt heads quite often. He cited their difference in opinion after the Charlottesville riot and even as recently as the current conflict with the poisoning in Great Britain.

Tillerson is just another added to an unprecedented list of turnover in White House staffing. According to Brookings Institution, as of mid-February, President Trump has had 34 percent of turnover in his first year. That number alone is triple the turnover Barack Obama had in his first year. The previous highest turnover  for the first year was Ronald Reagan with 17 percent. Alexander finds the high rate concerning.

"You need to have people that are qualified in these positions. The fact that you have so much turnover, this is not flipping burgers. This is pretty high level stuff that we’re talking about here. You do need to have people with experience."

Although some see it as troublesome, it can be seen that President Trump knows how he wants the job to be done.

"At the same time however, this is red meat for a lot of people that do like President Trump. There’s a certain kind of authenticity or honesty in the way that he will discard people or attack people or will go after people if he doesn’t think they are doing the job to his benefit."
