Lima Memorial Health System is being recognized by Ohio First Steps for Healthy Babies.

The program is through the Ohio Hospital Association and Ohio Department of Health and recognizes maternity centers in Ohio for taking steps to promote, protect and support breast feeding. The program is recognizing facilities with the "Maternity Care Best Practice Award,” which indicates a facility’s commitment to best practice by choosing to not distribute infant formula or formula company-sponsored sample packs.

According to Registered Nurse, Joan McBride, "The infant mortality rate here in Ohio is very high, so a lot of studies have gone back to find that breast feeding makes babies healthier. So they’re trying to get hospitals in Ohio on the same page to educate and promote breastfeeding."

In addition to their commitment to promote breastfeeding, Lima Memorial is providing a voluntary breastfeeding designation program, once a week at the hospital.
