Ohio has taken a step to increase security measures in schools with the passage of House Bill 318.

Backed by state representative Bob Cupp, the bill establishes qualifications and training requirements for school resource officers.

"The safety of our schools is, for obvious reasons, a big concern these days," said Cupp, the representative for the fourth district. "Unfortunately it’s the times we live in. So we need to take steps to make sure that our school children, our teachers and all who work in our schools are as safe as they possibly can."

Bill 318 defines what a school resource officer is and will require they complete 40 hours of specialized training for primary and secondary school settings. Typically, these officers are law enforcement officers and have the training to perform those duties.

"Not only is the school resource officer usually a law enforcement officer, but they are also the eyes and the ears and they hear things from students so that you can identify and prevent incidents before they occur."

It is unclear how many schools in Ohio have school resource officers. This bill will also provide grants from the attorney general to those schools interested in establishing an SRO program.

The last measure the bill imposes is the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission is instructed to determine what schools infrastructure needs to be upgraded to ensure the safety of students.

The bill will now head to the Ohio Senate for consideration.
