After 3 years of working on it, there is a new law to go after websites that are used in sex trafficking women and girls.

This past week, President Trump signed the “Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act.”  Senator Rob Portman and others have been investigating websites like Backpage.com to find a way to shut them down and to prosecute them for human trafficking charges.  They gave all the information they found to the United States Justice Department who recently indicted the owners and executives of Backpage dot com.    Now that the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Acts  is law, there is more legal the power to go after websites like Backpage on all legal levels.

“It allows state and local prosecutors to be involved in these investigations and prosecutions.  Right now they can’t do that,” says Senator Rob Portman who co-sponsored the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act.  “It also allows the victims to get justice.  In other words, the victims can get their day in court now.  So I am glad the Justice Department is finally stepping up and doing something in regards to Backpage.  I know they are using the information we gave them that no one else was able to uncover.”

Portman says that he hopes the new law will also help the victims of these trafficking sites to get back on their feet, by providing drug treatment or needed counseling
