The Allen County Board of Health recently released the number of child deaths that the county saw last year.

According to the report, 15 children under the age of 18 died in Allen County in 2017, with 10 of those child deaths happening in the first year of the child's life. 11 children were male and 4 were female, with natural deaths and accidents responsible for a majority of the number of deaths. The board meets to come up with recommendations to help increase public awareness and educating the community to help keep children safe.

"One of the recommendations we made was safe driving, just to increase awareness about distracted driving, especially with teenagers, so we partnered with different agencies in the area to make sure that we get that awareness and education out there," said Jeanetta Francy, Epidemiologist for the Allen Co. Health Dept.

The board also encourages expecting mothers to get prenatal care through the entire pregnancy. The full report can be found on the Allen County Public Health's website at www.allencountypublichealth.org.
