Area bars are working to improve how they can better help customers, but not in the way you would probably expect.

J's American Pub hosted and participated in a Safe Bars training today(4/16/18). The training also invited other local bars, including Somewhere in Time, Ray's Place, and members of the LGBT community to participate. The program focuses on teaching and empowering bar staff to identify and safely put a stop to dangerous situations or sexual harassment. Staff is taught to use a three-prong model called the 3 D's when intervening: direct, distract, and delegate - staff can then choose which tactic they feel most comfortable using, depending on the situation.

"It could be going up to someone and saying hey stop that's not okay, or it could be distracting them and saying hey the bartender wants you, I think there's a problem with your credit card, or grabbing a friend and saying, hey i need your help can we do this together," explained Nicole Fairburn, Campus Survivor Advocate.

Crime Victim Services will continue to spread awareness for sexual assault by partnering with local bars for a trivia night. The next trivia night will be April 18th at J's American Pub.
