Students at Allen East High School had questions about some difficult subjects, so they got some answers.

The Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.) group organized Issues and Answers Day; a day to give students an opportunity to discuss subjects like depression and anxiety, as well as substance abuse and abusive relationships. Topics like these are not always easy to talk about but do affect their community.

"We have a small community, so whenever something happens we experience it together as a group since it's such a small school," says S.A.D.D. member Kennedy Ball. "We've seen these struggles recently and we just don't want people to be upset anymore and hurt."

The students learned about resources in the area that they can reach out for help if they find themselves battling some of these issues, and they also got some tips on how to help others who may be struggling.

"They gave their speeches and then they let you ask questions whenever you want, which was really nice, and they helped with a lot of questions that I have," said junior Gabriel Williams. "It relates to a lot of people at the school and it found out ways for us to cope, to help different people, and it's really good to see that."

It is a big deal to the school to have their students equipped with the right resources when they or a peer are struggling. It is even more important that students see that there are people who can relate to their situation and can help them overcome.

"I think it makes them realize that they're not alone in their struggles and there are a lot of people around them that are also struggling that way," says S.A.D.D. adviser Kelly Prichard. "I think one of the biggest problems that these kids are facing is thinking that the way they feel isn't normal and there are so many more people that feel that way."

The Allen East S.A.D.D. group puts on an Issues and Answers day about every 4 years, this being the second event they have had.
