One local farmer has lost quite a few of the bees that he keeps over the past few months.

St. Marys farmer Roy Mcginnis has been interested in bees for most of his life, and says that he's lost over 30 of his hives over the winter, a majority of what he had on hand. The loss of bees in Ohio isn't uncommon - the National Agricultural Statistical Service found that around 11 hundred colonies were lost in the State of Ohio from April to June of 2017, a loss of 8 percent. Mcginnis says that the loss is discouraging and costly, too.

"They started dwindling in August, and they continued to dwindle through November, and there wasn’t enough bees there to support the hive here in February," Mcginnis said. "You can figure probably at this state and the way this frame looks, you’re looking at $400 plus per hive."

Mcginnis says he believes that chemicals and pesticides in the air were the main cause for the loss.
