The wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could mark a sign of change in strict royal rules.

Associate Professor of Communication Studies Jennifer Walton says this Saturday’s wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan is a sign of progress with relaxing the rules dealing with the royal family. During Queen Elizabeth’s lifetime, her uncle that gave up the throne to marry a twice-divorced woman. Plus as queen and the head of the Church of England, she denied her own sister the right to marry a divorced man because of church rules. Now the fact that her grandson is marrying a divorced American woman is a sign of a more relaxed attitude and a chance for more liberal stances for future heads of royal family like Prince William.

"The interesting facts about the monarchy is that they have been so staunch in their beliefs and they have made baby steps, but they have been very small steps toward a more liberal attitude and I think a lot of people will not want to see a lot of change. But if I think if he moves slowly, I think William probably also take a more liberal view of the monarchy,” said Jennifer Walton, Assoc. Professor of Communication Studies.

Walton adds American interest into the royals comes from the fact that we don’t have anything that can match the level of political or celebrity fame that the Windsor family has.
