As the weather begins to warm up, the amount of people hitting underground utility lines is on the rise, according to Peggy Ehora at Dominion Energy.

Ehora explains that calling 8-1-1 to have underground utility lines marked is required by law at least two business days prior to any digging project, no matter how big or small. She also adds that Lima is one of the biggest problem areas for Dominion Energy and that calling 8-1-1 before you dig is just as important as 9-1-1 is for homeowners.

Calling 8-1-1 for a markup is free. However, not calling and hitting a gas line has the possibility to result in fines higher than a million dollars.

"It can be very unsafe but it also can be costly for homeowners who just choose not to call. And at the end of the day, it's the law. The law says that you have to call before you dig and that's what we're asking people to just be mindful of. If you're not sure, just make sure to call 8-1-1 and we'll come out and mark our infrastructure for you," explained Ehora.
