Elida student wins Kiwanis music scholarship

Posted:

McKayla Gilbert, a senior from Elida High School, was awarded a $4,000 scholarship by the Kiwanis Club of Lima on May 15. This is the 30th year that the Ronald W. Richards Young Musicians Scholarship has been awarded to an Allen County senior who will be majoring in music. Miss Gilbert will be attending Heidelberg University. The check was presented by Music Chair Crystal Miller during the Kiwanis Club of Lima’s annual music awards luncheon at the Lima Masonic Center.

In addition, eleven seniors from eleven Allen County high schools were presented with the John Phillip Sousa Band awards as selected by their respective peers. This award recognizes outstanding senior leadership within their respective bands.

This is the 30th year that the scholarship has been presented and is in memory of Kiwanian Ronald W. Richards, who was the music director of Lima Senior High School for 25 years and choral director Trinity United Methodist Church for 30 years.

The Sousa Award, a national program, was originated locally by the former Metropolitan Kiwanis  Club of Lima  57 years ago and assumed by the Kiwanis Club of Lima when that club ceased operations in 1979.
