Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities has announced they are building their first home ever right here in Lima!

The board approved the construction of the home at 1208 East North Street after being awarded nearly $248,000 for the development of the property.

The project is in partnership with the private group, Living Options for Developmentally Disabled Individuals, Inc. or LODDI, who will also contribute funds toward development. Once complete, the home will house three local men who are currently living outside of the area.

"To bring these men back to Allen County to their homes where their families are depends upon us being able to have the right house available and so we did a lot of research in what would be the best thing for these men with autism. An open floor plan and safety features that aren't in typical homes and then a sensory room and a backyard that's fenced in and so we're really excited about it and I think to bring these men back to Allen County this is extremely important," said Theresa Schnipke, Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities Superintendent.

The next step for this partnership is to begin the bidding process for the home construction. They hope to break ground this summer and complete the project by Christmas 2018.
