The Better Business Bureau has compiled its 2017 numbers for sweepstakes and lottery scams and published a study on those numbers.

In the study, it was determined from what was reported that $117 million was lost due to scams last year. Over 2,800 individuals reported scams with a median loss of $500. President of the local BBB thought numbers were low given the calls they receive each week. Scams were found to originate in Jamaica and Costa Rica, targeting the elderly. The most common scams are through phone calls and mailings about winning the lottery or sweepstakes. A new one has been targeting people using Facebook.

Parson advises to just be aware and ask questions. Lotteries and sweepstakes will never call you asking for money.
