LIMA, OH – Mercy Heath – St. Rita’s celebrated 100 years of medical service to the surrounding communities with The Red Door Gala on June 13, 2018. The inaugural Red Door Gala was a fundraising event to celebrate St. Rita’s 100 years of healing and will become an annual event. The creation of the Red Door Gala was inspired by the “The Door of Mercy,” a poem written by one of St. Rita’s founding Sisters, which commemorates and honors our mission of mercy.

A surprise musical guest was revealed during the event when she walked through the red door to awaiting guests. LeAnn Rimes, a singer, songwriter, actress, and author sang for the crowd of about 300 guests, including an encore of Amazing Grace.

Nearly $270,000 was raised through sponsors and donors in attendance. All proceeds from the annual event will support the Mercy Health Foundation Greater Lima’s Legacy Fund, a newly created fund that supports current critical medical needs in the Lima area community. This year, the Red Door Gala will fund initiatives focused on our community’s opioid epidemic.

“It was 100 years ago that the Sisters of Mercy came to Lima with only their faith, their determination and their compassion to respond to the most pressing health issue of the time – the pandemic flu of 1918,” said Bob Baxter, president and CEO, Mercy Health - Lima. “As our community has grown, so has St. Rita’s, but we remain true to the Sisters of Mercy’s pledge to show mercy to those in need while remaining agile enough to adjust to the needs of the times. Addressing the opioid crisis in our community is one of our most pressing needs.”

Funding for the gala was made possible through corporate contributions to the Mercy Health System Foundation, which helped underwrite the evening event. Thanks to these mission partners, 100 percent of the money raised at the Gala will stay in the community and help fund programs through the Legacy Fund.

Steve Walter, President of Trisco Systems, Inc., served as Honorary Chair of the Red Door Gala, and The Walter Family served as the presenting sponsor of the inaugural event.

“I’d like to thank Mercy Health - St. Rita’s and its leadership for putting its Mission to the forefront,” Walter said. “Our family has supported the hospital through four generations. The creation by the Foundation of the Legacy Fund and helping those in need consumed by this terrible opioid crisis is a key reason that our family strongly supports the purpose of this event.”

Recognizing the need to battle this epidemic, Mercy Health strategized with their teams on how to facilitate improved outcomes and reduce the overall risk for patients susceptible to opioid addiction. An example of one of the programs that evolved includes the Brief Intervention and Referral for Treatment (SBIRT) program in the St. Rita’s Emergency Room. The program is designed to reduce morbidity and mortality of alcohol and other drug use through early intervention and the integration of medical and behavioral health approaches. Individuals are screened while being seen in the emergency department at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
