Ohio State University at Lima hosted a community forum in the City Club to generate ideas on how to make the American dream more attainable for the people in our region.

It is part of the Alliance for the American Dream which is a partnership between Ohio State University and Schmidt Futures, a company started by Google co-founder Eric Schmidt that invests in improving prosperity across America. The company awarded $1.5 million dollars to OSU to get the conversation going on how we can help Ohioans move up and out of poverty and overall strengthen the middle class across the state and right here in our region.

"The middle class is the backbone of our communities, of America," says Elena Irwin, Professor of Regional and Environmental Economics at Ohio State. "If we think about what is it going to take for all of us to be able to pursue the American dream we need a strong middle class in order to do that so it's critically important to our economy, both nationally as well as locally."

Many of the ideas floated at the forum revolved around increasing access to resources like health and child care as well as education and other types of training. Namely, the types of things that will open up the doors to more job opportunities for people as our local industries continue to grow and change over time.

"We're seeing so many changes in hiring and workforce so any opportunities we have to get individuals from one place to another to help them better themselves and their families not only helps the community but helps our business and industries who are supported by our communities as well."

OSU is inviting the community to submit their elevator pitch on how to increase upward social mobility for low earners or to increase the sustainability of economic opportunities for the middle class. They will go through every pitch and pick three to send to Schmidt Futures for consideration.

They will be accepting ideas through their website www.americandream.osu.edu until July 15, 2018.
